[!abstract] Christ’s discourse with Nicodemus. John’s testimony.
Book: John · ← John 2 · John 4 →
1
EN And there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
^1
2
LA Hic venit ad Jesum nocte, et dixit ei: Rabbi, scimus quia a Deo venisti magister, nemo enim potest hæc signa facere, quæ tu facis, nisi fuerit Deus cum eo.
EN This man came to Jesus by night and said to him: Rabbi, we know that you have come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which you do, unless God be with him.
^2
3
LA Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Amen, amen dico tibi, nisi quis renatus fuerit denuo, non potest videre regnum Dei.
EN Jesus answered and said to him: Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
^3
4
GR λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ Νικόδημος: πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος γεννηθῆναι γέρων ὤν; μὴ δύναται εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ δεύτερον εἰσελθεῖν καὶ γεννηθῆναι;
EN Nicodemus said to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born again?
^4
5
LA Respondit Jesus: Amen, amen dico tibi, nisi quis renatus fuerit ex aqua, et Spiritu Sancto, non potest introire in regnum Dei.
EN Jesus answered: Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
^5
6
EN That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
^6
7
LA Non mireris quia dixi tibi: oportet vos nasci denuo.
EN Wonder not that I said to you: You must be born again.
^7
8
EN The Spirit breathes where he will and you hear his voice: but you know not whence he comes and whither he goes. So is every one that is born of the Spirit.
^8
9
GR ἀπεκρίθη Νικόδημος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ: πῶς δύναται ταῦτα γενέσθαι;
EN Nicodemus answered and said to him: How can these things be done?
^9
10
GR ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ: σὺ εἶ ὁ διδάσκαλος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ταῦτα οὐ γινώσκεις;
EN Jesus answered and said to him: Are you a master in Israel, and know not these things?
^10
11
EN Amen, amen, I say to you that we speak what we know and we testify what we have seen: and you receive not our testimony.
^11
12
GR εἰ τὰ ἐπίγεια εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε, πῶς ἐὰν εἴπω ὑμῖν τὰ ἐπουράνια πιστεύσετε;
EN If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not: how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?
^12
13
LA Et nemo ascendit in cælum, nisi qui descendit de cælo, Filius hominis, qui est in cælo.
EN And no man has ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
^13
14
LA Et sicut Moyses exaltavit serpentem in deserto, ita exaltari oportet Filium hominis:
EN And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
^14
15
EN That whosoever believes in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
^15
16
EN For God so loved the world, as to give his only begotten Son: that whosoever believes in him may not perish, but may have life everlasting.
^16
17
EN For God sent not his Son into the world, to judge the world: but that the world may be saved by him.
^17
18
EN He that believes in him is not judged. But he that does not believe is already judged: because he believes not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
^18
19
EN And this is the judgment: Because the light has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light: for their works were evil.
^19
[!note]- The judgment…
That is, the cause of his condemnation.
20
EN For every one that does evil hates the light and comes not to the light, that his works may not be reproved.
^20
21
EN But he that does truth comes to the light, that his works may be made manifest: because they are done in God.
^21
[!note]- Unless a man be born again, etc…
By these words our Saviour hath declared the necessity of baptism; and by the word water it is evident that the application of it is necessary with the words (Matthew 28:19).
[!note]- Is not judged…
He that believes, viz., by a faith working through charity, is not judged, that is, is not condemned; but the obstinate unbeliever is judged, that is, condemned already, by retrenching himself from the society of Christ and his church.
[!note]- He that does truth…
that is, he that acts according to truth, which here signifies the Law of God. Thy law is truth. Psa. 118. 142.
22
EN After these things, Jesus and his disciples came into the land of Judea: and there he abode with them and baptized.
^22
23
EN And John also was baptizing in Ennon near Salim: because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.
^23
24
LA Nondum enim missus fuerat Joannes in carcerem.
EN For John was not yet cast into prison.
^24
25
EN And there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews, concerning purification.
^25
26
EN And they came to John and said to him: Rabbi, he that was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you gave testimony: behold, he baptizes and all men come to him.
^26
27
EN John answered and said: A man cannot receive anything, unless it be given him from heaven.
^27
28
LA Ipsi vos mihi testimonium perhibetis, quod dixerim: Non sum ego Christus: sed quia missus sum ante illum.
EN You yourselves do bear me witness that I said that I am not Christ, but that I am sent before him.
^28
29
EN He that has the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears Him, rejoices with joy because of the bridegroom’s voice. This my joy therefore is fulfilled.
^29
30
LA Illum oportet crescere, me autem minui.
EN He must increase: but I must decrease.
^30
31
EN He that comes from above is above all. He that is of the earth, of the earth he is, and of the earth he speaks. He that comes from heaven is above all.
^31
32
EN And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies: and no man receives his testimony.
^32
33
EN He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true.
^33
34
EN For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God: for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
^34
35
LA Pater diligit Filium et omnia dedit in manu ejus.
EN The Father loves the Son: and he has given all things into his hand.
^35
36
EN He that believes in the Son has life everlasting: but he that believes not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abides on him.
^36
